Fanø and the folk high schools on the way to a UNESCO list
On 31 August 2026, Minister for Culture Zenia Stampe selected Fanø's music, dance and costume tradition and the folk high schools (højskolerne) to continue towards UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage. Each will receive 0.5 million kroner for work on the application. The folk high schools got the most votes when almost 60,000 Danes voted in 2025 on the best candidate for living Danish cultural heritage.

King Harald V of Norway has died
King Harald V of Norway died on 28 August 2026, aged 89. His son Haakon became the new king of Norway at the same moment. The Danish and Norwegian royal houses have close ties, and King Harald was godfather to King Frederik X.

Strong growth in the Danish economy

Initiatives to protect the Danish language

New 11-month military service
