New official portrait of the King
On 25 September 2026, the first official painted portrait of King Frederik X since the change of throne was unveiled. It was painted by the artist Cathrine Raben Davidsen. The portrait hangs in the Knights' Hall (Riddersalen) at Frederiksborg Castle together with the portraits of the other monarchs from Christian IX onwards.

Agreement between Greenland, Denmark and the USA
On 22 September 2026, the Premier of Greenland (chair of Naalakkersuisut), Jens-Frederik Nielsen, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and US President Donald Trump signed an agreement to strengthen security in the Arctic and the North Atlantic. The agreement was signed in the UN building in New York. It must now go through the necessary parliamentary procedures before it enters into force.

Russian frigate fired a flare at a Danish helicopter
On 14 September 2026, a Danish Armed Forces helicopter was photographing the Russian frigate Soobrazitelny in international waters southeast of Gedser. The frigate fired a signal flare at the helicopter, and the flare passed about 10-15 metres from it. According to the Armed Forces, it was a routine task that has been carried out in the same way since 2022.

Danish film wins the Golden Lion in Venice
On 12 September 2026, May el-Toukhy's film 'Kvinde ukendt' (Woman Unknown) won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. It is the first time since Carl Th. Dreyer's 'Ordet' in 1955 that a Danish film has won the festival's main prize. The film's lead actress, Mathilde Arcel, won the award for best actress.

New PISA results and a proposed school phone ban

Inflation rose to 2.0 percent

Summer 2026: dry, sunny and a heat record
According to DMI (the Danish Meteorological Institute), summer 2026 was the eighth warmest since 1874, and it was dry and very sunny. On 27 June, 37.0 degrees Celsius was measured at Ødum in East Jutland and at Beldringe on North Funen. This is a new Danish heat record.

Money moved from the culture pass payment card
The culture pass (kulturpas) is a trial aimed mainly at young people aged 15–24 who are neither in work nor in education. Fewer young people than expected have used the culture pass's digital payment card: only about 6 million of 30 million kroner in 2026. On 1 September 2026, the Minister for Culture and a majority of parties therefore decided to move about 20 million kroner to longer culture pass programmes.

On 7 September 2026, the government sent out a draft law for consultation on an age limit of 15 for social media. The government is behind the proposal together with Venstre and Det Konservative Folkeparti. The law is expected to enter into force on 1 July 2027.
